H1N1 Swine Flu Virus

There have been many reports in the media about experts predicting a difficult Swine Flu season this fall. We do not want to be alarmist about such predictions. However, taking certain steps and precautions seems prudent.

Germ Transmission In The Workplace
Areas and surfaces in the workplace such as restrooms, desks, doorknobs, light switches, handrails, computer keyboards and mice, telephones, tables, chairs, coffee pots and vending machines are prime locations for germ transmission. Even with proper cleaning, these areas will immediately become contaminated again once touched by a carrier.

Disinfection and Germ Lifting
Proper disinfectant and cleaning techniques can help to reduce the risk of germ transmission on these and other surfaces. To be effective, disinfectant must be pre-applied and left to dwell for up to 10 minutes. For surfaces without the capacity to accommodate such dwell time, the combination of the lesser contact time along with vigorous cleaning can serve to lift and remove remaining unkilled germs.

Frequent Hand Cleaning
The most prudent and proactive measure a company can take is to provide information to Employees and strongly encourage frequent and thorough hand cleaning. Wash hands for at least 20 seconds using warm water and soap. Using disinfectant wipes on hands and other surfaces can also help.
